The New E-Commerce Reality: Every Monday is Cyber Monday

The media loves to give names to trends…

First, there was Black Friday, the name given to the day after Thanksgiving. Its origins are foggy – with some stories claiming Philadelphia police named it for the chaos, crowds and traffic typical of that day, to retailers claiming it as a day leading them into the black (or profitability), vs. red (losses). Regardless, the name stuck for many years, fueled by deals and discounts offered by traditional retailers.

Then came Cyber Monday, which got its name from a National Retail Federation (NRF) press release in 2005. It followed research that showed the trend of people shopping on their computers at work after the long Thanksgiving weekend, and traffic usually spiked significantly due to faster internet connections at work than home. Retailers quickly saw a new opportunity and helped solidify Cyber Monday with online deals and discounts. History — once again — was made.

Like all trends, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are heading out of fashion quickly. In fact, data shows that people shopped online every day of April, 2020 more than they had shopped on the prior Black Friday. Since then, shopping behavior has changed forever, and retailers must adapt. It makes sense that Cyber Monday has also waned in significance, since many people aren’t even required to be in the office the Monday after Thanksgiving. Remote work, hybrid work, and mobile usage of popular apps like TikTok and Instagram are changing everything we know about e-commerce.

At Tangiblee, we’ve observed that the traffic spikes are less spikey, and the stability is consistent. A picture is worth a thousand words. Check out the two graphs below.

During the Black Friday, as every other day, Tangiblee servers were 100% up with sub-second and stable response time

We pride ourselves on helping retailers prepare for the unexpected. In a world where the latest TikTok might create a massive shopping frenzy, retailers need to rely on vendors that deliver consistent results and stable performance on an ongoing basis. As Co-Founder and CTO Yevgeniy Kuznetsov points out, “We operate our systems as if every day is Black Friday and every Monday is Cyber Monday.”
